Thoughts and Prayer for Today

"Daily Spiritual Journey "

"Lord, what wilt Thou have me do?
Behold the true sign of a totally perfect soul: when one has reached the point of giving up his will so completely that he no longer seeks, expects or desires to do ought but that which God wills.”

- St. Bernard

"This Day In History"

384 - Pope St. Siricius was consecrated Bishop of Rome. His famous letters—the earliest surviving texts of papal decretals—focus particularly on religious discipline and include decisions on baptism, consecration, ordination, penance, celibacy for priests, and papal authority.

Youth today

"Values, Hopes and Dreams"

In our Gospels, Jesus constantly encouraged people to do their best, to keep focussed and especially on the really important things in life.
When we find ourselves saying
‘I can’t’,
pray for the encouragement to say
‘I can’.

St. Anthony the Abbot

Anthony "the Great", the "Father of Monks", ranks with those saints whose life exercised a profound influence upon succeeding generations. He was born in Middle Egypt (about 250) of distinguished parents.

St. Anthony, the father of monks, retired to the desert at about the age of eighteen in order to live in perfect solitude. He laid the foundations of community life, and gave to his disciples that profound broad and sane instruction, the mature result of solitude and prayer, which forms the surest basis of Christian asceticism.

Saint Athanasius, who knew Anthony and wrote his biography, said, "Anthony was not known for his writings nor for his worldly wisdom, nor for any art, but simply for his reverence toward God."

We may wonder nowadays at what we can learn from someone who lived in the desert, wore skins, ate bread, and slept on the ground. We may wonder how we can become him. We can become Anthony by living his life of radical faith and complete commitment to God.
