"Those whose piety is not too solid go along happily and well when God gives them consolations in prayer. But if He deprives them of such delights, they immediately begin to languish discontentedly, just like children who thank their mother when she gives them sweets, but cry when she takes them away. Sensible spiritual consolations ordinarily generate complacency and this, in turn, begets pride, which poisons the soul and corrupts every good deed.
For this reason, although at first Our Lord gives them to us in order to entice us, He afterwards deprives us of them to prevent them from harming us."

1487 - Birth of Pope Julius III. Elected pope on Feb. 7, 1550. His interest in the Society of Jesus (a religious order founded by Ignatius of Loyola) influenced him to establish the Collegium Germanicum (1552) to train German priests in Rome under the Jesuits.

St. Nicholas of Tolentino
St. Nicholas, a native of Sant' Angelo, in the diocese of Fermo, was born about the year 1245. As a young man, but already endowed with a canon's stall, he was one day greatly affected by a sermon preached by a Hermit of St. Augustine and decided to enter this newly-founded Order. At first he lived at the hermitage of Pesaro and then at Tolentino where he died in 1305. His whole life was remarkable for its great austerity which was inspired by his great love of the cross. According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is his feast.
